Core Celestial’s Mines: Responsible Sourcing from Ratnapura, Sri Lanka
Core Celestial sources gemstones from the renowned Ratnapura region in Sri Lanka, a globally significant centre for gemstone mining. We work with local partners who own 100% of the mines, contributing directly to the region’s economic development and ensuring fair participation for Sri Lanka and its citizens in their gemstone resources.
In Ratnapura, gemstones are found relatively close to the surface, typically at depths of 5 to 15 meters. This allows for safer mining processes for the miners. Despite substantial improvements in techniques, many stages of the process continue to be performed manually.
The gems found in these gravels include blue sapphire, ruby, chrysoberyl, garnet, spinel, tourmaline, zircon, and various types of corundum. The mining process involves scooping up the gem-bearing gravel, which is then washed before being sorted in a sorting house. The rough gems are subsequently cut and licensed before being shipped to their final destination.
